I do two types of editing: page reads and story reads. Each story must go through two reads before it goes to web or print. I can give either first or second reads. Per issue cycle, I usually give around four to eight story reads. I look to make sure that the story is balanced in terms of sources and viewpoints, that there is a strong lead and horse, that AP style is correct and check for general accuracy. Giving reads is also a great coaching opportunity for younger staffers.

The other type of editing that I do is page reads. Each page goes through at least three reads before it goes to the publisher. I typically give a page its last read before it goes to print. If I don't give the page a "lock" read and one of the other executive editors does, I'll come in after school to review all the pages.

Here I am giving a copy a lock read. When I'm done I give the page back to the editor to make the changes before it is exported and sent to the publisher.
